PARK AND FLY
a perk for newest Chandler residents

A Scottsdale developer known for its award-winning apartments is ready to launch its first single-family homes development.

Mark-Taylor Residential Inc. is starting 21 semi-custom homes at its Stellar Airpark Estates in Chandler. Forty-four other sites will be sold to individuals who then will hire their own custom builder.

The development is west of Stellar Airport, which is southwest of Chandler Boulevard and McClintock Drive.

The Mark-Taylor community is an expansion of the original Stellar Airpark homes, which date to the 1960's. And like the original properties, the new sites are designed for private hangars in the rear of the lots.

The homes with hangars are the first single-family home project for Mark-Taylor.

One of the homes will be built for Jeffrey Mark, a private pilot who with Scott Taylor formed Mark-Taylor in 1990.

"I've always wanted to live in an air park and be able to fly an airplane to my house," Mark said.

Mark flies a Cessna Citation jet he stores on the industrial side of Stellar Airport.

Prices of the semi-custom homes will range from $280,000 to $460,000. They have from 2,000 to 3,000 square feet. Half-acre sites for custom homes start at $155,000.

A few of the buyers plan to use the homes as part-time residences.

Mark said his company recently spent more than $800,000 resurfacing the 4,000-foot runway and existing taxiways and updating the runway lighting system.

The company started construction of streets, additional taxiways, sidewalks and utilities in November. Home-owner-pilots will have remote control of the taxiway gates.

Mark said his company is considering starting another air park community in the Houston area.

Mark-Taylor is known for its 12 apartment communities in Scottsdale, Chandler, Tempe, Phoenix and Mesa, which have a total of nearly 3,800 units.

In January, Mark-Taylor was named the 2000 "Builder of the Year" by Multifamily Executive, a national trade magazine.

In 1999, two of the company's Phoenix-area apartment communities won National Apartment Association awards.
